Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he and his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, would be divorcing after a 25-year marriage.

Nexter.org reports about the possible reasons for the split, how couple’s assets will be divided and whom Jeff Bezos is dating now.

Divorce of the year

Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, will divorce after 25 years of marriage, the couple announced on Wednesday morning. They have four children together.

“We have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,” they said in the statement, which was posted to Jeff Bezos’ Twitter page. “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

The couple didn’t explain the reason for the divorcing but Jeff Bezos is reportedly dating former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos reportedly has a new romance in his life: former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez.

The New York Post and the National Enquirer both reported that Jeff Bezos, 54, is romantically involved with 49-year-old Sanchez, a former “Good Day LA” news anchor with Fox who also works as a helicopter pilot and entrepreneur.

The TV host is still married to Patrick Whitesell, the co-CEO of prominent Hollywood talent agency WME.

Sanchez has three children — two from her marriage to Whitesell and one from a previous relationship.

The National Enquirer said it conducted a four-month investigation into Bezos and Sanchez’s alleged affair, and suggested that it was its impending report — due to be published in full later this week — that sparked the announcement from Bezos.

MacKenzie Bezos to become one of Amazon’s biggest shareholders?

Bezos, worth an estimated $136.2 billion, is the richest person in the world. It is not yet clear how the divorce will impact his net worth, or whether it will affect his stake in Amazon, the e-commerce giant he founded in 1994. Bezos, 54, owns roughly 16% of the business, which comprises more than 95% of his fortune.

He also owns the Washington Post and rocket company Blue Origin.

It’s not clear whether Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos signed a prenuptial agreement or formed another arrangement regarding what would happen if they split.

The couple lives primarily in Washington State, which requires divorcing spouses to equitably divide “community property,” including all income generated during a marriage.

If MacKenzie Bezos, 48, does indeed receive half of her husband’s assets, she would be worth more than $68 billion, making her the fifth-richest person in the world. Even a 1% payout would constitute one of the largest divorce settlements in history.
