Dead Butt Syndrome and Other Invisible Threats That Await You Behind Your Office Desk + Test To See If You Are In a Risk Zone

203

Office work might seem to be the easiest and less harmful of all because you just sit and so your job and that’s it. In fact, there are invisible threats that can seriously damage your health.

Nexter.org prepared you an explanation and a test to find out if you already have it.

Dead butt syndrome

Gluteus medius tendinopathy, which is also known as a dead butt syndrome affects people who sit for a long time. If you don’t have breaks to walk for a little bit of exercise when you have to work sitting down for 8 or more hours in a row, your butt muscles simply forget that they have to work and atrophy.

Human body parts don’t work separately, it is a complex system and if some part doesn’t work as it is supposed to be, other parts get affected as well. So, when your muscle tone decreases, your knees, pelvis and waist suffer too. To prevent that, take a break every 2 hours for at least 5-15 minutes and walk or just stand.

Bacteria

Door knobs are one of the most “touchable places”, a few hundred people touch it during a day. And not all of them follow the rules of personal hygiene. Naturally, the number of bacteria on such objects is huge.

If there are no doors, it can be even more dangerous, as open space is an excellent zone for the transmission of viruses and bacteria – here they spread much faster.

Noise

Noise can have a negative impact on human health. In open large rooms, the sounds of printing printers, music from the headphones of colleagues, conversations at adjacent tables merge into a single mass.

Excess noise causes stress, insomnia and other disruptions to the central nervous system, which slows down all reactions, shorten the time of active attention, reduce efficiency and quality of work.

Take a test

Stand up and lift a leg. If the hip of that leg sags, that means that your gluteus muscles are weakened.

If you have a job that requires you to sit for a long time you should:

  • do exercises that activate the gluteus muscles;
  • pick stairs instead of an escalator or an elevator;
  • substitute your regular chair with a gym ball;
  • do a crab posture which will reinforce your gluteus muscles;
  • if you can’t stand up, then lift and lower your legs under the desk.
