It’s coming…and it’s gonna be HUGE

Forecasters expect Tropical Storm Florence to become a major Category 1  on Monday as it gained strength in the central Atlantic. It is expected to turn into a major storm by Monday night as it churns over the open ocean and heads toward the U.S. East Coast, the U.S.  agency said.

“This is a life-threatening situation,” the National Hurricane Center said. “There is a danger of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 36 hours.”

Florence was about 685 miles (1,100 km) southeast of Bermuda as of 11 p.m. on Friday (0300 GMT on Monday), packing maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 km/h), the Miami-based forecasters said. The  could make landfall possibly as a Category 3 or higher on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

Recent storms brought winds of up to 140 mph (neared Category 5 strength) today. 1 million people forced to the territories of the southeastern U.S. Coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. “This is a serious storm and it’s going to affect the entire state of Virginia,” Northam said on behalf of NBC affiliate.

Local people hurried up to board up their homes, formed long lines at gas stations and emptied the shelves of hardware stores and supermarkets.

How to survive and prepare for Hurricane Florence

Before:

  • Prepare a plan to secure your house, for instance, install the protection for windows as the hurricanes tend to bring strong winds that might break your windows;
  • Don’t forget about the roof: strengthen it to securely fasten your roof as storms come with heavy rains;
  • Make sure that all the trees around the house are trimmed to minimize the risk of broken branches;
  • The storm might come with floods, so it’s better to think about the boat beforehand;
  • Prepare a well-stocked Emergency Survival Kit: water supply for at least three days, three-day supply of food, blankets, warm clothes, first-aid kit, portable radio with a set of spare batteries, flashlight with extra batteries, whistle in case you have to give a signal for help, maps of the area.

During:

  • Make sure you get the freshest information about the storm via radio, TV, and internet;
  • Secure your home: close windows, doors, and roof. Hide everything that can fall and break;
  • Listen to the authorities instructions and do everything they say, for example, turn off utilities and phone (only for emergencies);
  • Have some cash prepared as ATMs may not be working;

Alexander Gerst posted on Twitter few pics of Hurricane Florence taken from the Space Station with a caption “Watch out, America! #HurricaneFlorence is so enormous, we could only capture her with a super wide-angle lens from the @Space_Station, 400 km directly above the eye. Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you.”

“This is why the big picture matters, and listening to the official evacuation orders. These two photos are the same – just cropped differently. Please stay safe down there!”
