Goodbye, Starbucks

Starbucks Executive Chairman Howard Schultz’s announcement that he will leave the company at the end of the month prompted immediate speculation about a potential political future for the man who built Starbucks into a global behemoth.

Schultz, who transformed U.S. coffee culture and made his colossal chain synonymous with the beverage, told the New York Times that he had told the company’s board about his plan to retire a year ago.

Schultz has spoken frequently about race, and Starbucks has taken progressive stances on social issues — including gay marriage, immigration and ’s travel ban. Last year, the company said it plans to hire 10,000 refugees over five years.

The coffee mogul is 63 years old and is worth an estimated $3 billion, according to Forbes. He has stood by his pledge to hire refugees at a time of “America First” rhetoric from the White House.

Seems that Schultz has always been political, once he told the Times, “For some time now, I have been deeply concerned about our country—the growing division at home and our standing in the world.” When asked directly if would run for president, he said, “One of the things I want to do in my next chapter is to figure out if there is a role I can play in giving back. I’m not exactly sure what that means yet.”

In a leaked video from last year he told employees that U.S. president Donald is “creating episodic chaos every single day.”

Schultz is seen as a potential Democratic candidate and taken public stances of a slew of social issues from student debt to race relations.

David Gergen, an adviser to four presidents and co-director of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School told The Times the public is “longing for a strongman, or woman” and Schultz is “definitely being pursued.”

“He has a powerful social conscience,” Gergen added. “He comes from a very different place than the kind of chief executive with a big ego who wants the trappings of presidential power.”

As Nexter.org reported before, Donald Trump confirmed he will run for re-election in 2020 but it is unusual for a sitting president to hire a campaign manager three years before the election.
