How To Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

254

Being safe whilst riding a motorcycle is something that you want to prevent given the fact that 80 percent of accidents that they are involved in result in either serious injury or death. To help you keep safe whilst on your motorcycle, there are a number of things that you can do, including the following:

motorhelmet

Wearing the correct protective gear

Each and every time that you go out for a ride on your motorcycle, you should wear protective gear that is made from leather and has both long sleeves and legs in order to ensure that all parts of your body are completely covered up. In addition to this, you should also wear strong boots, some sort of eye protection, and durable gloves. When out riding during the winter months, you should also add some extra layers underneath your leathers in order to keep warm.

Wearing bright clothing

It is important that you make yourself as visible as possible whilst riding on your motorcycle so that other road users can see you. To help with this, you should wear brightly coloured or even reflective clothes that shine and reflect back the light from the headlights of other vehicles.

Wearing a full face helmet

No matter how short of a journey that you go for, you should always wear a helmet that covers your face and is approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. You should aim for one that is as lightly colored as possible in order to provide you with the maximum amount of visibility to other road users. The most common motorcycle deaths are as a result of riders not wearing a crash helmet. A good rule of thumb is to replace your helmet every five years or so or immediately after having an accident in one.

Avoiding bad weather

Although it is inevitable that at some point in time you will have to ride your motorcycle in poor weather conditions, if you can avoid doing so then you should try not to do it. This is because it greatly increases your chances of having an accident. When riding out in the rain, make sure that you pack some waterproofs with you and even a spare change of clothes so that you can stay comfortable throughout the entity of your journey.

Participating in training

For those riders who are relatively new to using motorcycles, they should invest their time into participating in a motorcycle riding safety course. In fact, even if you have been riding for a number of years it is still likely to be beneficial to learn the rules of the road again and get rid of any bad habits that they have picked up along the way.

Other ways in which motorcycle riders can protect themselves and avoid having an accident whilst out on the road include never ever drinking or using drugs and riding, not speeding, being hyper aware at road intersections, and being alert and responsive at all times whilst on their vehicle.
