How to Clean a Mousepad?

It may sound strange but the speed and quality of your mouse greatly depend on the purity of your mousepad. A problem like a cursor jumping across the screen is the first sign of contamination on a pad.

Everyone gets nervous when the mouse does not react to the clicks properly. The problem is particularly noticeable when you play or work with important files. Moreover, the durability of the mousepad and the mouse itself decreases without proper care.  The main reason for this is dust accumulation, which gradually begins to destroy computer accessories.

So how and when to clean a mousepad?

Pads with a fabric covering of various degree of roughness and the rubberized base for better adherence to a table are the most popular. Fabric surfaces are comfortable but quickly collect dust, hair, grease, and dirt from your hands.

In general, pad care methods depend on the material of which it is made. But there is one common rule: the mousepad must not be washed in the washing machine. This will destroy it.

You may clean a mousepad with a soft brush or toothbrush, wipes, a sponge.

Each type of material has its own effective detergents.

  • The plastic pad is easy to care for. This pad can be washed with warm water and any detergent. If the plastic is rubber-based, it should be well dried after washing.
  • The fabric rug is easily washed with soapy water.
  • Pads with gel filler mats are washed just like fabric pads. The only difference is that they cannot be pressed hard when you remove the dirt not to affect the shape.
  • Rubber pads are the most convenient for cleaning. You may easily clean them with a warm soapy solution.
  • Cork mousepads cannot be washed. You can wipe them with a damp cloth with any detergent for office equipment.

Mousepad Washing Tips

Gamers pay considerable money for quality gaming surfaces. Some of these accessories are more expensive than a good keyboard or mouse. It is a pity when the wrong washing spoils their appearance or performance. So, try to remember simple rules when washing your mousepad.

  • First of all, make sure that the pad does not fade under the influence of water. How to check it? Take a wet sponge or cloth and rub the corner of the pad. If the color has not changed, everything is fine.
  • Moisten the pad under the tap and glue it to a flat surface. This can be either the wall of the bath or the bottom of the basin or sink. The water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees.
  • Do not use aggressive detergents that can damage the fabric surface. You may choose shampoo, baby soap, shower gel or dish gel for this purpose. They provide reliable cleaning and do not damage the product.
  • When folded out, gently apply the detergent with your hand or sponge. Avoid circular motions, but run in one direction.
  • After soaping, leave the pad for at least 5-10 minutes in the foam.
  • Rinse the pad properly so no foam remains. Foam leftovers adversely affect the operation of mouse optics. In this case, the shower will help.
  • To dry the pas, squeeze the water out of it in a circular motion. The accessory must remain attached to the flat surface. You must not twist it in any case! Use paper napkins to speed up the process. Change them as they get wet. Leave the pad to dry in a hanging state for at least a day. The accessory should not be creased as it will get deformed. Do not dry it in the sunlight or on a heater.
