How to Choose an Addiction Treatment Center

Every year, there are 2.1 million visits to the emergency room that are related to drug abuse. And, approximately 23.5 million people in the US have an alcohol or illicit drug problem.

But, although addiction and drug abuse are major problems in the US, there are a lot of options available when it comes to overcoming addiction.

One of the best options is to enter an addiction treatment center.

The problem, however, is that there are a lot of addiction treatment centers out there, and they’re not all treated equally.

How do you know which one to go to?

Check out this guide to learn how to choose an addiction treatment center.

Know Your Options
As we mentioned earlier, rehab centers can be quite different from one to the next.

So, before you start touring rehab centers, you should know what your options are. For example, there is inpatient or outpatient rehab. With inpatient rehab, you’re at the rehab facility 24/7, whereas with outpatient rehab, you leave at the end of the day to sleep in your home.

There are also rehab centers that offer a more holistic approach, ones that offer special classes like yoga and meditation, and ones that heavily focus on therapy and group work.

It’s important to think about what tools you’ll need to overcome your addiction and what type of setting works best for you before you choose a drug addiction treatment center.

Take a Tour and Ask the Right Questions
It’s very important that you don’t choose a rehab center solely based on the pictures you see online.

Instead, you should make sure you take a tour of the rehab center that you are thinking about attending. During your tour, you want to make sure you ask some very important questions, such as:

  • How long have you been in operation?
  • What is your success rate?
  • What types of insurance do you accept
  • What does a typical day in your rehab center look like?
  • Do you offer mental health services as well?
  • Do you have a dual diagnosis treatment program?
  • Can I see your license and certification?
  • What amenities does your facility offer?
  • How long is your rehab program length?
  • Do you offer medical detox as well?
  • What sort of specialized programs do you offer, if any?
  • Do you offer family support services?
  • What sets your rehab facility apart from the rest?
  • Do you use evidence-based practices?
  • What is the ratio of counselors to patients?
  • What sort of staff do you have on hand (ie, nurses, psychologists, wellness specialists, etc)

By asking these questions and touring the facilities, you’ll have a much clearer picture of whether or not the rehab center is right for you.

Post-Treatment Recovery Support
Last but not least, you want to make sure the rehab center you choose offers some form of post-treatment recovery support.

While rehab is great, it’s a very enclosed and structured environment that does not mimic the real world.

In the real world, you will not always have someone by your side to talk you away from that drink or drug. That’s why it’s very important that the rehab center you choose offers post-treatment recovery support. This way, you can meet people in the “outside” world who will be able to hold you accountable on your journey to sobriety.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be sure to find the right addiction treatment center. Please comment below if you have any questions!
