Self-improvement practices, traveling, studying, and maintaining positive relationships will help you become a well-rounded person.

Here are some tips on how to become a person who gets along well with others and accomplishes goals because they have a deep understanding of how the world works and their place in the greater scheme of things:

Practice Self-improvement

A disciplined approach to self-improvement molds your character.  In his autobiography, Benjamin Franklin outlines how he chose thirteen virtues he would love to have and practiced one virtue a week.

We often describe people who have a good character as “the salt of the earth.”  For instance, many historians, consider Abraham Lincoln as a man of exemplary moral character.

People with character have integrity. When they say that they will do something, you know they will do it. They aim to be fair and straightforward even when it would serve their interests better to be disingenuous.

People with character are courageous and have fortitude when faced with overwhelming adversity. For instance, if they have a car accident, they won’t behave like victims if they are ripped off by an insurance company. Instead, they will be proactive and find a personal injury attorney to defend them against predatory corporate interests.

People with character are influential people because other people admire the choices they make in difficult circumstances. They stand up for what is right in their society even when it’s controversial.

You develop your character through a conscientious effort over time. You have the right stuff because you constantly practice doing the right thing.

Travel Far and Wide

Travel can make you a better person in a remarkable number of ways because it forces you to step out of your encultured belief systems.

You stop rushing around trying to accomplish trivial things. Instead, you pause and focus and notice the world around you, observing what really matters in life.

You stop obsessing about your own imagined shortcomings or worrying about how things will turn out in the future. Instead, you notice the good in other people and the beauty in the world around you.

You witness different belief systems and expand your values.

You get to know many people on your travels and spontaneously develop compassion for other people who share their life stories with you. It’s hard to be judgmental once you hear first-person stories of poverty, loneliness, serious illnesses, broken romances, and the loss of loved ones.

Cultivate a Love of Learning

Many people have an aversion to studying new things because it reminds them of their tedious school years when they had to sit in classes for hours bored to tears with a subject that they had no interest in.

This is an unfortunate attitude to adopt because cultivating a love of learning can transform the humdrum world into a fascinating place. When you look behind appearances, you stimulate your interest in perspectives and philosophies. While travel will help you learn a great deal about people and  places,  it’s not enough.

Studying science will fill you with a sense of wonder about the nature of reality, studying history will help you understand how civilization have risen and fallen, and studying philosophy will teach you how to think in subtle ways.

Try these suggestions on how to become a well-rounded person. When you are a well-rounded person, you’ll enjoy your life more and contribute to the lives of your family, friends, and community with grace and ease.
