$17 million loss

Yesterday, users tried to connect to MyEtherWallet, they saw a broken link and clicked on it to proceed with the verification. People were redirected to a server in Russia, and the user’s wallet was emptied.

That is what users saw when they tried to access the wallet:

The hackers managed to steal more than $13,000 in Ethereum during two hours. The attackers’ wallet already contains more than $17 million in Ethereum.

MyEtherWallet commented on the attack on Reddit, “We are currently in the process of verifying which servers were targeted to help resolve this issue as soon possible. We advise users to run a local (offline) copy of the MyEtherWallet.”

The hackers attacked the infrastructure of the internet, making the Russian server look trustworthy. The Verge concluded the bad listing was obtained through a communication with Amazon’s “Route 53” system.

Amazon denies any attacks in the statement, “Neither AWS nor Amazon Route 53 were hacked or compromised. An upstream Internet Service Provider was compromised by a malicious actor who then used that provider to announce a subset of Route 53 IP addresses to other networks with whom this ISP was peered.”
