The users of Gmail found a lot of spam emails in their sent folders, and that even after changing the password the emails kept being sent.

According to Mashable, people found a bunch of sent spam emails from their accounts to an unknown receiver.  “My email account has sent out 3 spam emails in the past hour to a list of about 10 addresses that I don’t recognize.”

“I changed my password immediately after the first one, but then it happened again 2 more times,” states the message from Google Help Forum.

The interesting thing was the spam messages kept sending even though the user changed their password. admitted the problem to Mashable:

“We are aware of a spam campaign impacting a small subset of Gmail users and have actively taken measures to protect against it. This attempt involved forged email headers that made it appear as if users were receiving emails from themselves, which also led to those messages erroneously appearing in the Sent folder.”

“We have identified and are reclassifying all offending emails as spam, and have no reason to believe any accounts were compromised as part of this incident. If you happen to notice a suspicious email, we encourage you to report it as spam. More information on how to report spam can be found by visiting our Help Center“.

How to protect your account

1) Limit the number of apps that have access to your personal info: every time you sign up for an app with +, it requires the access to your info;

2) Change your password often: once in a few months spend one minute to change your password to completely new one;

3) 2-Step Verification is your answer: it is an additional layer of protection for your Gmail Account;

4) Track locations: check ‘last account activity’ at the bottom of your Gmail account and see if there are any suspicious check-ins;

5) Don’t provide anyone with your login or password.
