This horrible story went viral as a woman notices her toenails started to falling off and the doctor claims it’s due to the fish pedicure a patient performed months ago.

Six months prior, the woman had dunked her feet in a tub of water filled with tiny fish called Garra rufa that will eat dead human skin when no plankton are around. After a young woman’s toenails started to separate from her toes, a doctor finally zeroed in on the reason: a fish pedicure, according to a report published Tuesday in the journal JAMA Dermatology.

This phenomenon, known to doctors as onychomadesis, usually results in the nail falling off long after an initial event (such as an injury) arrests nail growth.

Experts say they’re unsure how infections might be spread through fish pedicures. It could be due to lingering microbes from whomever’s feet were there last, versus the fish itself.

Health experts have raised concerns that, in fish spas, the fish are recycled from person to person, and the tubs may not be properly cleaned between uses.

Brazilian blowout

You’ve heard of it, you’ve seen the dramatic before and after shots on Instagram, and you may have even looked into getting it done yourself. If you have curly hair, the idea of getting beautiful, natural looking, straight hair might seem an attractive one.

The Brazilian Blowout is a liquid keratin formula that bonds to your hair to create a protective layer around each strand, effectively diminishing frizz, sealing the cuticle, and providing armor against any external damage. But actially not always it helps and sometimes may casue even more harm.

Be careful though, because, while the occasional blowout is probably harmless, the chemicals that they use to do it are not. There have been reports of the chemicals used in Brazilian blowouts causing skin irritation, burns and even shortness of breath.

Ear candles

If someone suggested that you put a piece of rolled up paper in your ear and then set it on fire, you’d be a little dubious. But, this is exactly what ear candles are. They are supposed to remove ear wax and toxins from your ear, but they can also lead to blockages in the ears, burns and ruptured eardrums.

Even the FDA has said it has ~concerns~ about the safety issues surrounding lit pieces of highly flammable cloth being burned on top of people’s faces. There have been no actual scientific studies to prove the effectiveness of ear candles, but there have been plenty of reports of facial burnings, perforated eardrums, and blocked ears.

Apart from the fact that, if these go wrong, everyone can see it, eyebrow waxing can also be pretty dangerous. Repeated waxing will damage the hair follicles, some people have burned by the hot wax and sometimes, skin can be ripped off along with the hairs.

Tanning beds

This one should be obvious by now, as everyone is aware that tanning beds lead to premature aging, but they still exist, so people are still using them! Did you know that, according to the National Cancer Institute, women who use tanning beds are 55% more likely to develop skin cancer? That’s reason enough to go without a tan.

Bikini waxes are nothing new but make sure you go to a reputable technician for this beauty treatment. A burn from the wax can be very painful and the ripping out of the hairs can damage the skin and can lead to infections. This is more of a serious problem than you might think. The state of New Jersey debated banning the fuller Brazilian waxes after two women ended up in hospital with their injuries.
