“Modest experiment”

announced its plans to produce an alcoholic drink for the first time in company’s 125-year history.

It’ll be what’s called a Chu-Hi in Japan: A canned, ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage that’s traditionally made with the spirit shōchū, carbonated water, and lemon.

You can get Chu-Hi in flavours like lime, grapefruit, among others, and can get as strong as 9 percent alcohol.

While hasn’t released any detail about the product, it appears they won’t be dropping anything too heavyweight.

Chu-Hi – an abbreviation for shochu highball – has been marketed as an alternative to beer, proving especially popular with female drinkers.

A senior Coke executive in Japan said the move was a “modest experiment for a specific slice of our market”.

“We haven’t experimented in the low alcohol category before, but it’s an example of how we continue to explore opportunities outside our core areas,” said Jorge Garduno, ’s Japan president.

But more likely the drink won’t be sold outside of Japan, he suggested.
