Flies plague in Volgograd

A few days before the first match of the in Volgograd between England and Tunisia, the city was attacked by flies and mosquitoes. There were so many insects that an exception was made for this match in the rules of safety – they allowed to carry repellents to the local fan zone.

In April, the authorities were going to spend 42 million rubles ($650,000) on fighting insects.

“If Sunday night at the stadium was anything to go by, these little creatures are going to make it extremely uncomfortable for everyone there,” said Radio 5 live commentator John Murray. “There are billions of them. At one point last night it felt like I had 100,000 in my hair. Fortunately, they haven’t bitten me at all, it’s just their presence that is unpleasant.”

Patrick Vockins, 26, from the Isle of Wight, also complained about the flies, “I’ve never experienced anything like it. If you stop moving on the street you’re instantly attacked by clouds of these tiny little flies. They get everywhere and some of them bite. The players would be breathing them in.”
