FIFA World Cup 2018 Day 1: Robbie Williams’ Middle Finger, Russia’s Controversial Victory and More

Robbie Williams’ middle finger

Williams performed a few songs to kick off the tournament. During a pause in one song, and while standing near the sideline, the Englishman looked into one of the cameras and gave the world the middle finger.
It was not obvious what the 44-year-old meant by the gesture but he is known to be a campaigner for LGBT rights and was heavily criticised for accepting the invitation to perform in a country known for its outdated stance on gay people.
Fox released a statement condemning and apologizing for the gesture:
“The 2018 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony was a newsworthy event produced by a third party and carried live on Fox. As it was broadcast live, we did not know what would happen during Robbie Williams’ performance and we apologize.”
Russia destroys Saudi Arabia
Thursday only featured one match and the opening ceremony, but there was plenty to talk about. The Russian national team is off to a fantastic start after destroying Saudi Arabia, 5-0. It was Russia’s first World Cup win since 2002.

Netherlands stamps scandal

PostNL, the national postal operator in the Netherlands, has printed stamps showing the connection between the World Cup in Russia and the MH17 disaster in 2014, Ukraine’s Yevropeiska Pravda online newspaper has reported, with reference to Dutch website NOS.
The stamp depicts a man who knocks down the plane in the air with the ball. Below is the text “FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.”
