Nebula Award has announced its nominees for 6 awards. The ceremony is scheduled for May 19th, 2018.

Nexter.org chose best fantasy books among the nominees.

The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, Theodora Goss

The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter” is Theodora Goss’ debut novel about scientists and a bunch of cool monsters.

Goss wrote her doctoral dissertation on 19th century Gothic literature, so she probably knows how to deal with this style.

Reasons to read:

  • It’s an expanded version of Goss’s first short story, The Mad Scientist’s, which was a huge success;
  • The main character is a scientist’s daughter. Her father was Doctor Jekyll (sounds familiar), who participated in mad scientist organization;
  • Author adds lots of characters that we’ve already acquainted with or whose names we’ve heard: Edward Hyde,  Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Victor Frankenstein and many more;
  • Old and highly appreciated monsters and horror characters are shown in the modern 21st century;

The Stone Sky, N.K. Jemisin

“The Stone Sky” is the last part of Jemisin’s  “the Broken Earth trilogy”. The story set on an enormous continent Stillness.

N.K. Jemisin became one of the authors that won the Hugo award for Best Novel two years in a row. Maybe this time she also will win the Nebula Award.

Reasons to read the series:

  • “The Stone Sky” is a perfect end to Jemisin’s fantastic series;
  • The book reveals the story about people, so-called “orogenes,” who survived after apocalypse;
  • Those orogenes obtained magical powers from Earth reservoirs, thus they are treated badly and are forced to overcome hard training;
  • In the last part, The Stone Sky, main characters decide to travel to another side of the Stillness to call the moon back and stop the cycle of apocalypses, so-called “Seasons”.

Autonomous, Annalee Newitz

Annalee Newitz is io9 founding editor and “Autonomous” is her first published fiction book.

The book tells about the mid-22nd Century Canada, where people work with advanced robots, who have human flesh and brains (Replicants?)

Reasons to read:

  • Modern Robin Hood: the story is set around the main character, Jack. She is a pharmaceutical pirate, who sells drugs on a black market to poor people;
  • The drugs turned out to be dangerous and caused a lot of death, that’s why she’s going to learn what’s wrong with this product;
  • The second main character is a robot, who is to hunt Jack;
  • The world-building is well-elaborated and just amazing.
