The gigantic solar drone is named after the eagle from Greek mythology, Aquila, and is made on the basis of Ascenta’s , bought by Facebook in March 2014.  The cost was $16.6 million.

Facebook has been developing drones for distributing Internet in the most remote corners of the world for several years now.

Last year, the company launched a giant drone Aquila, but in December, due to a strong wind,  it crashed when landing. The project team did not despair and after some modifications of the design repeated the attempt.

What’s new?

When developing the second version of Aquila, the developers took into account the first unfortunate experience and added hundreds of new sensors to collect data during the flight.

The work of the autopilot also has been updated. For the landing of the drones, Facebook prepared a large 150-meter round platform, sanded with sand.

Built in Somerset, Aquila’s communication system has been supplemented with new radio transmitters to increase throughput, and propellers that always stop in a horizontal position to minimize the risk of damage.

Facebook made the surface of the case became smoother, the wings were equipped with solar panels, which help increase the resistance at landing.

A Facebook’s giant solar-powered drone is promised to be shown on the exhibition at London’s V&A that will hold about 100 exhibits of new , interesting science, and modern art.

The new device is taking off almost twice as fast as its predecessor and flew at an altitude of over 900 meters, but it can not be called fast – the speed of the solar drone does not exceed 10-15 miles per hour.
