Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe leaves

Brendan Iribe, the former CEO (demoted from the role in 2016) and co-founder of Oculus, announced he is leaving Facebook. He’s the last founder of successful startups bought by Facebook.

“I’d like to sincerely thank everyone that’s been a part of this amazing journey, especially Mark [Zuckerberg] for believing in this team and the future of VR and AR,” Iribe said in a Facebook post.

Iribe joined Facebook when it acquired Oculus for $2 billion in 2014 and later developed new versions of the hardware, for instance, $399 Oculus Quest.

Not the first big man to leave

The founders of the Instagram that was owned by Facebook for the past six years announced that they are leaving the company.

The resignation of Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger can hurt Facebook significantly, taking into account that it recently appeared in the center of the scandal with the leakage of personal data of users. Entrepreneurs founded Instagram in 2010, and in 2012 the popular service was bought for a billion dollars by Facebook. Analysts call Instagram one of the best purchases of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.

After the leaving of the founders, the future of the app is vague as it is still unclear who will lead the company, and whether the new executives will succeed in continuing the development of Instagram. In their goodbye letter, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom noted 4 crucial things that can’t be missed.

Also, the co-founder and head of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, left the company. Presumably, due to disagreements with Facebook data privacy issues.

The reason for disagreement with Facebook regarding the further development of its service and the requirements for privacy is the following: the social network allegedly wanted to use some of the personal data to improve the quality of the targeted advertising, and Koum was against it.

Koum confirmed he left WhatsApp by publishing a post on Facebook, but without specifying any details about the reasons for leaving.

“I’m leaving at a time when people are using WhatsApp in more ways than I could have imagined. The team is stronger than ever and it’ll continue to do amazing things. I’m taking some time off to do things I enjoy outside of technology, such as collecting rare air-cooled Porsches, working on my cars and playing ultimate frisbee. And I’ll still be cheering WhatsApp on – just from the outside. Thanks to everyone who has made this journey possible.”
