Oh, Really? This ’16-Year-Old’ Ethiopian Athlete Became Center of Scandal at the World U20 Championships. Guess Why?

At the IAAF World U20 Championships among athletes under the age of 20, a scandal broke out around the 5000m bronze medalist. What can we say, 16 years should be doubled!

Is she really 16-year old? 

One of the most discussed participants of the IAAF World U20 Championships was the athlete from Ethiopia Girmawit Gebregziabher, who won a bronze medal in the race for 5000 meters. She is 16-year-old, according to her passport. But this runner from Ethiopia Girmavit Gebrzhihair looks much older as her appearance makes you strongly doubt her age.

According to the official report of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), she was born on November 21, 2001. However, the athlete looks much older. She got immediately mocked by social media users and the fans of the Championship.

Several participants of the tournament questioned the legitimacy of the performance of Girmawit Gebregziabher at the junior championship and expressed distrust of the data of her metric. Ethiopian athlete faces trial due to the deliberate understating the actual age.

According to IAAF, “it has been a breakout year for Girmawit Gebregziabher. Following her victory in the junior race at the Ethiopian Cross Country Championships in February, she was Ethiopia’s only individual gold medallist at the African Cross Country Championships in Chlef, taking the women’s U20 title.”
