This Victorian water tower was built in 1877 and served the purpose of improving the water supply to Queen Victoria’s nearby Sandringham House and estate. Nowadays, it’s possible to stay in the 60ft octagonal tower and live like royalty in one of the three converted bedrooms beneath the huge water tank. Location: Margate, Kent

Spend a night in the slammer without breaking the law at this prison-themed bedchamber. Situated in the cellar annexe of a Georgian townhouse in Kent, Penny Rope offers accommodation unlike any other. Guests staying here take on the role of prisoner for the night and the cell comes complete with bunk beds, bars on the window and, of course, a lock and key. Don’t let that fool you, though.
