Following the public critics and massive tragedies at the border, where families were separeted, President reversed his course, signing an executive order to keep parents and kids together on Wednesday.

“We’re signing an executive order. I consider it to be a very important executive order. It’s about keeping families together, while at the same time being sure we have a very powerful, very strong border,” Trump said.

The first lady Melania Trump reportedly had imortant role in the changing course.

The first lady has been working for several days behind the scenes, encouraging the President to keep families together, a White House official told CNN. She has had several private conversations with her husband, pushing him to do all he can to keep families at the border intact, whether via a legislative route, or acting alone to stop the process, the official said.

The new order signing cause a new wave of fresh political and legal chaos and new accusations of inhumanity.

  • Many concerned for the fate of the children who have already been separated from their families. The executive order did not mention anything about reuniting the families who have already been separated, or whether it would even be possible to do so. In some cases, parents have already been deported while their children remain in the US.

“Kids should not have been separated from their parents in the first place and they still don’t belong in jail,” Anthony Romero, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. “He has caused irreparable damage to thousands of immigrant families.”

  • The order maintains Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy that criminally prosecutes all migrants who cross the US-Mexico border illegally, and seeks to hold them in detention while their asylum cases are processed.

  • Under the new executive order, officials will continue to pursue criminal charges against those who cross the border illegally.

“The President doesn’t get any brownie points for moving from a policy of locking up kids and families separately to locking them up together. Let’s be clear that Trump is making a crisis of his own creation worse,” said Karen Tumlin, director of legal strategy at the National Immigration Law Center, in a press call on Wednesday. “Children, especially those fleeing persecution, need safety and environments where they can thrive and play and be safe. They don’t need jail.”
