Hawaii havoc
The number of buildings destroyed by Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has risen to 30 (26 homes and 4 other buildings), AP News reports. Lava is bursting more than 200 feet into the air.
Almost 1, 700 people have been forced to leave the populated area on Hawaii’s Big Island as Kilauea volcano erupted after a series of recent earthquakes. Puu Oo, a volcanic crater collapsed this week, bursting lava down the mountain to the residential area.
Hawaii’s Governor David Ige says he asked National Guard to help evacuate thousands of people. “Those remaining in Leilani and Lanipuna Gardens and along Pohoiki Road need to prepare to leave because if the winds change, you could be gassed,” Hawaii County Council member stated in Facebook.
Amber Makuakane, a single mother of two, stated their home was destroyed by lava, “They don’t really understand,” she said about her children. “My son keeps asking me, ‘Mommy when are we going to go home?’”

Several small earthquakes also continue to rock the area since a 6.9 magnitude temblor hit on Friday, which were the strongest ones since 1975.
It’s reported that new vents could open up, so it would be impossible to predict where the ground could split and burst lava out.

According to the USGS, the latter one was the state’s strongest since a 7.1-magnitude quake that hit in “almost exactly the same location” in 1975.
