Desperate situation requires desperate decisions

” is the date the Cape Town estimates 4 million people would run out of water.

The government created a list of restrictions include limiting each person’s water use to a maximum of 13.2 gallons, regardless of location – home, work or school. The city will also restrict borehole use for irrigation to Tuesdays and Saturdays for one hour before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm.

The reason for such extreme situation is a three-year drought, considered the worst in over a century.

Marine salvage experts figured out the crazy idea that may help to solve water crisis – bring a part of break off iceberg in Antarctica to Cape Town.

How they plan to do it?

Nicholas Sloane believes it’s possible to transfer an iceberg that has broken off from Antarctica and drag it to the coast of Cape Town, where it would melt into usable water.

“We spoke to local government late last year; they thought it was a crazy idea,” Sloane told CNN on Tuesday. But Sloane said that geography could be the key to the success of the project.

Cape Town-based Sloane said his team could wrap passing icebergs in fabric skirts to protect them and reduce evaporation. Large tankers could then guide the blocks into the Benguela Current that flows along the west coast of southern Africa.

A milling machine would then cut into the ice, producing a slurry and forming a saucer structure that will speed up the natural process, he said.

A single iceberg “could produce about 150 million liters per day for about a year,” around 30 percent of the city’s needs, said Sloane, a director at the U.S. marine salvage firm Resolve Marine.

He said he was planning to hold a conference later this month to try and sell the $130 million project to city officials and investors. The city council was not immediately available for comment.
