Behind the Scenes

We know ‘Coachella’ as one of the most wonderful places to be in the spring: cool new people, great unforgettable performances, tasty unusual food. However, everything is not as good as it seems to be – behind the smiley photos there are thousands of women being sexually harassed.

Vera Papisova, the reporter of Teen Vogue, decided to investigate this case and interviewed 54 women on the festival. The results were worse than expected, ‘ all of them had a story of sexual assault or harassment that occurred this year at Coachella.’

Moreover, her own experience is better than any other evidence, ‘In the three days I was at Coachella, I only spent a total of 10 hours at the actual festival, where I watched numerous performances and interviewed festivalgoers about their experience with sexual assault and harassment for Teen Vogue. During the 10 hours, I was reporting on this story, I was groped 22 times,‘ the reported stated.

For instance, in her report there is a bunch of the statements as the following, “As I was walking, a guy grabbed my butt cheek,” said Anna, 27. “This is the sort of environment where I think people assume it happens a lot, so you can get away with participating in it.”

How to protect yourself

  • Have a friend near you: create a meeting spot with your friends and make sure you won’t get lost on your own.
  • Mark your camp: if you’re staying at the festival overnight, mark your tent so you’ll easily find it during the night after the concert.
  • Drink wisely: if you’re up to be drinking alcohol, make sure you stay hydrated and don’t drink more alcohol than water.
  • Don’t accept a drink from unknown people: don’t share your drinks or accept drinks from people you don’t know – they may put drugs in your glass.
  • Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’: if someone asks you to do something you don’t wanna do, be brave enough to say ‘no’ and find your friends as soon as possible.

Stay safe and have fun at the Coachella and other festivals this year!
