What happened
A Chinese woman armed with a kitchen knife attacked children at the gate of a kindergarten in Chongqing in central China, local police said Friday.
The 39-year-old, identified only by her surname Liu, launched the attack as children returned from morning exercises about 9:30 a.m. (0130 GMT), police said on their official account on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.
The victims were taken to hospital while guards and staff at the kindergarten restrained the attacker, said the police, adding that they were investigating. The motive for the attack remains unknown, though some reports on social media say the woman had a grievance against the government.
Video circulating on social media shows injured children being led out the school – some of them appear to have knife wounds to their faces.

Other footage appears to show police taking the alleged attacker away. Police said investigations are continuing.
Friday’s incident isn’t the first time children in China have been hurt at school by people wielding knives. Nine students were killed at a middle school in Shaanxi province in April by a 28-year-old man who was later sentenced to death.
