CBD Gummies Becoming a Healthcare Trend

Cannabis and its derivatives have long been restricted by government agencies and vilified in the media alongside THC. While cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid that is extracted from the cannabis or hemp plant, it does not produce psychoactive effects and it has been proven to have beneficial medicinal properties.

Last week, the DEA announced that FDA-approved CBD drugs will no longer fall under Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act but will instead be treated as Schedule 5 drugs. Prior to that announcement, the industry had already reached an estimated worth of more than $1 billion, as investors have been eyeing CBD-related stocks for the past few years. Gummy bears containing CBD have become one of the most popular ways of consuming the compound as a health supplement.

Why Gummy Bears?

CBD is effectively sold as a medicine that provides relief for certain conditions like epilepsy. The FDA approved the first cannabis-derived drug, Epidiolex, for the treatment of rare forms of epilepsy in patients over the age of two years old. In states where cannabis is medically legal, there has been an increasing number of parents using CBD to treat their child’s epilepsy. Most vitamins and supplements are available in gummy form, so it makes sense that that CBD gummies would become a popular way to consume CBD.

Who is Eating all the CBD Gummies?

While the majority of people taking CBD are using it to prevent epileptic seizures, it is also being used to treat anxiety, cancer, and sleeping problems. Furthermore, CBD is used as an analgesic pain reliever and is considered to be very effective for treating conditions that cause chronic pain. Recent studies suggest that CBD also reduces the risk of developing diabetes, and proponents say that it is even good for preventing acne. Research shows that CBD has neuroprotective properties as well. Ultimately, there’s a growing percentage of the population that has turned to CBD for relief, and many of those people have opted to get their daily CBD through gummies because they’re convenient.

Bigger Business Than Expected

With about 3.5 million people suffering from epilepsy in the United States alone, it’s easy to see why a natural and effective cure like CBD could become popular so quickly. In fact, it’s estimated that a little more than 1% of the population have been diagnosed with epilepsy, and many studies have published results indicating that CBD is the most effective treatment for certain forms of epilepsy. As a result, the CBD industry has quickly ballooned into a major sector with an estimated overall worth of more than $1 billion. However, analysts expect that number to increase by a factor of 10-20 if CBD is completely taken off of the controlled substances list.

A Step Towards Federal Legalization?

People in the cannabis community are excited about the DEA’s decision to reschedule CBD as a Schedule 1 drug with FDA approval. However, it’s unlikely that THC will ever be rescheduled because it has psychoactive and potentially narcotic effects. Still, supporters of both CBD and cannabis can appreciate that there is now at least some lenience towards other cannabinoids.
