The deadliest wildfire in California history

On Saturday night, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea confirmed the death toll for Northern California’s deadly Camp Fire has risen to 76 after five additional human remains were found. He said they have so far tentatively identified 63 people, and that those identifications are waiting for DNA confirmation.

That leaves at least 79 dead in the past few weeks from wildfires raging all over the state.

According to the Associated Press, Honea confirmed that the list of missing persons from the Camp Fire now stands at nearly 1,300 people.

In Paradise, the flames moved so fast that some victims died in their cars in a chaotic evacuation as gridlock formed on the two exit routes out of town.

The Camp Fire is already the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.

Rain is forecast for the area this week, potentially helping douse the flames, but raising the risk of floods and mudslides that will swell the misery of 46,000 people under evacuation orders.

“US should spend more time raking”, Trump thinks

President Donald Trump suggests poor land management is a contributing factor to raging wildfires in California and that US should rake like Finland to avoid fires. Despite the statement, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said in an interview published Sunday that he doesn’t recall discussing that with Trump when they met last weekend in Paris.

Niinistö told the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, a CNN affiliate, that the subject of raking was never brought up in his conversations with Trump. He said that they did discuss the California wildfires when they met, and that he told Trump “we take care of our forests.”

As you remember, Trump mentioned raking while surveying the devastation in Northern California on Saturday.

“I was with the President of Finland and he said we have — much different — we are a forest nation. He called it a forest nation,” Trump said. “And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem. And when it is, it’s a very small problem. So I know everybody’s looking at that to that end.”

Some on social media pointed to the difference in Finland and California’s climates as a possible reason for differing approaches to forest management.

Bemused Finns also took to their accounts to mock the suggestion that raking forest floors was a national obligation.
