On October 17 Canada became the largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace. No need to explain how much Canadians are happy about – Nexter.org will better show you in pics and tweets.

Get the party started

While in the US recreational marijuana change state by state, Canada has just legalized weed nationwide. Starting from October 17 adults there can now purchase pot and even grow it in their homes for personal use.

Across the country, as government pot retailers opened from Newfoundland to British Columbia, jubilant Canadians waited for hours in line to buy the first state-approved joints.

In Alberta, a government website that sells pot crashed when too many people tried to place orders.

Moreover, Canada said it intends to pardon everyone with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the newly legal threshold.

“I don’t need to be a criminal anymore, and that’s a great feeling,” Canadian singer Ashley MacIsaac said outside a government-run shop in Nova Scotia. “And my new dealer is the prime minister!”

“We are witnessing history,” said Shawn King, the host of a countdown to legalization on a local radio station. “Marijuana prohibition is ending after 96 years. There’s going to be a generation of people that never knew it was ever banned.”

So, to say the legalization was a seminal moment for Canadians, akin to the ending of Prohibition in the United States in the 1930s.

How do the shops look like?

The stores have a sterile look, like a modern clinic, with a security desk to check identification. The products are displayed in plastic or cardboard packages behind counters. Buyers can’t touch or smell the products before they buy. A small team of employees answer questions but don’t make recommendations.

One Twitter user shared a video to demonstrate a look inside Canada’s first cannabis shops as lineups form on legalization day.

Canadians who prefer to make purchases online may also order marijuana products through websites run by provinces or private retailers and have it delivered to their home by mail.

According to Canada’s national statistics office, 4.9 million Canadians used cannabis last year and consumed more than 20 grams of marijuana per person. In such a brave move, the government hopes to take control over the black market.

“Stop tattling on people smoking weed”, Toronto police warn

Toronto’s police have been pretty blunt about the matter, telling people to stop tattling on their neighbours for smoking weed or possessing pot plants.

The directive came in a series of funny tweets, comparing the reporting of smoking or possession to trivial matters, like calling 911 to ask for directions or what one should do with frozen meat in the case of a power outage.

“Do not call police for this,” the tweets read.
