Can CBDa Really Help with Inflammation, Depression and Anxiety?

CBDa for those of you not familiar with the acid is a derivative of CBD, that interacts with COX-2, an enzyme that spreads inflammation through the body. It also affects serotonin levels. Although first suspected to have no impact on the body’s endocannabinoid system, CBDa research is coming out that suggests this is the CBD everyone has been looking for.

Two of the enzymes that CBDa interacts with are COX-1 and COX-2. These help spread inflammation in the body when an intruder attacks.
Inflammations are a natural reaction of the body in case of injury, illness, or disease. By inflaming the problematic area, the body stops it from spreading. Then, our immune system fights the disease.

Therefore, inflammation is an essential and expected reaction of our immune system. Without inflammation, our wounds would fester and the smallest cut would put us at risk.
However, sometimes, the body sends the wrong message and starts inflaming body parts without a real reason. This is the root cause behind many auto-immune disorders, for example arthritis, which causes chronic joint pain.
Auto-immune disorders often lead to chronic pain and a decreased quality of life. They are also linked to anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

According to clinical research, CBDa interacts with COX-2 and blocks it from spreading inflammation. Many anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen target this particular enzyme. Now, it appears that CBDa does so, too. This makes CBDa pills a possible tool in the fight against chronic inflammation and auto-immune disorders.

CBDa for depression and anxiety
There is growing research regarding CBDa’s possible help with depression. The medical community is assuming that, since CBD has shown some promising results in alleviating anxiety and depression, then CBDa could be of interest, too.

In many cases of anxiety and depression, the culprit is serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects our mood, perception, of well-being and happiness. That is why it is also called “the happy chemical.” People experiencing depression are found to have lower levels of serotonin in their brain.

CBDa appears to interact with the receptors that control anxiety and depression, such as the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A. Interestingly, the same receptor is targeted by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medication. However, CBDa is believed to have fewer and more minor side-effects, even when consumed in great quantities.

Once serotonin is secreted, it is broken down by enzymes and discarded after a while. CBDa seems to inhibit the reabsorption of serotonin. By stopping its reabsorption, CBDa makes serotonin flow in greater quantities and for longer times in the brain, thus potentially alleviating depression and anxiety.

A 2018 trial appears to support the view that CBDa can be an effective tool in treating depression.

CBDa for nausea
An important field of study has focused on the potential to treat nausea with CBDa.

Various clinical studies such as one undertaken in 2013 showed that 5-HT1A, the serotonin receptor CBDa interacts with, is also involved in creating the feeling of nausea and queasiness.

By interacting with the 5-HT1A receptor, CBDa appears helpful in treating nausea.

CBDa for cancer
There is very little solid research regarding the effectiveness of CBD, let along CBDa, on cancer. And it should be stressed that no current medical protocol includes CBDa.

However, CBDa may be a future tool in the fight against cancer. A 2012 research and a 2014 research showed that CBDa could stop the migration of an aggressive type of breast cancer cells. This means that CBDa might be effective in stopping cancer spreading across tissues and organs.

More concrete research and clinical trials are necessary to explore whether CBDa’s does, indeed, have any therapeutic value. However, its potential nausea-fighting effects mean that CBDa may help alleviate the nausea associated with chemotherapy. This is a common side-effect of cancer treatment. Having a nausea treatment can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

CBDa for epilepsy
It makes sense that the medical community would look into CBDa to treat epilepsy. After all, CBD has been approved as a medication called Epidiolex, for the treatment of some rare forms of epilepsy in children. Interestingly, GW Pharmaceuticals, the British-based pharmaceutical company that manufactures Epidiolex, has also secured a patent for the use of CBDa in treating epilepsy. Since CBDa is the parent of CBD, researchers are examining whether it offers even more potential than CBD.

Research and studies have shown promising results concerning the possible effects of CBDa in inflammation reduction and in fighting depression and anxiety. There is some clinical evidence around the potency of CBDa in fighting nausea. CBDa products combined with guidance from a family physician may be worth exploring if you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms.
