Pros

Beautiful first love

“It’s a piercing glimpse of a young man’s bright, confounding first love, the kind of love that brings disorientation and rhapsody,” – Chris Vognar.

Based on a novel by Andre Aciman, Call Me by Your Name, the story reveals the relationship between 17-year-old Elio and an adult man Oliver, who slowly fall in love with each other.

Handsome actors

Call Me By Your Name features Armie Hammer (Oliver) and Timothée Chalamet (Elio). Both actors are very beautiful and talented.

Hammer is famous for the main part in The Lone Ranger and Chalamet have played in Lady Bird, which wasn’t left unnoticed.

Marvelous Italian countryside

“ (It) unfolds along country roads, lazy rivers, moonlit trysts and, finally, as the summer nears the end, something more,” Michael Phillips pointed out.

Luca Guadagnino shows most picturesque landscapes and views of Italy which pleases our eyes.

Cons

Beautiful, but extremely boring

17-year-old Elio lives in Italy his family. His father, a professor, who invited an American student Oliver to help with his work for the summer.

And guess what? Elio gets impressed with the confident and handsome Oliver, and their friendship turns into a relationship.

Obviously, they have many obstacles to overcome. Just like in any other drama movie.

“Compared with. . .any number of films dealing with down-to-earth sexual feelings that go wild,” said Armond White.

Too long

Call Me By Your Name lasts for 132 minutes, but 80-90 minutes would surely be enough to show the story and character-building part.

“It’s like sitting through your oversharing neighbor’s two-hour vacation slideshow,” stated Luke Y. Thompson.

Straight play gay

It goes without saying, both Hammer and Chalamet did an incredible job in Call Me By Your Name, but there are reviews complaining about the fact that both actor are straight, but play gay roles.

“The message from Hollywood is clear: “We love queer stories, we just don’t want to cast you in them,” Ben Freeman stated in his blog.

Also, Freeman brings up a question why there are so many movies about gay men “leaving gay women, intersex and trans people wildly underrepresented”.
