Southern California is suffering again: tons of debris and mud are coming downstream from Santa Barbara County through the areas of  Montecito. Thirteen people are dead so far.

Update (4:00 a.m. EST Jan.11):

  • Business Insider states 17 people died in destructive mudslides in California;
  • As Santa Barbara County Sheriff called it “a World War One Battlefield”;
  • 13 people are still missing, rescue crews are doing their best to find them;
  • More than 100 homes are destroyed and are covered in mud and debris;
  • At least 28 people were injured in storm-related accidents;

Key facts:

  • Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown reported 13 people died in the massive mudslides and the number of the victims can rise;
  • According to New York Times, there was a 14-year-old girl among the dead buried under mud and debris;
  • Currently, the police department is trying to identify the dead and missing people;
  • 300 people are reportedly trapped in Romero Canyon;
  • More than 50 residents of Montecito area have been rescued and evacuated;
  • About 170 people have been taken to hospital;
  • The area will be closed for at least two days after “mud attack”;
  • The incident is the result of heavy rains that had fallen on the territory of Southern California and was reported to be more than 5.5 inches;
  • This can affect more than 20,000 people in the future;
