Goodbye, Theresa May

Prime Minister Theresa May finally gave in to the intense political pressure over her failure to secure Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, announcing her resignation in an emotional address to the nation on Friday.

Standing at a lectern in Downing Street, May said she deeply regretted not being able to deliver Brexit, the issue that brought her to power in 2016 and which consumed her premiership in the three years since.

May said she would quit as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7, but would stay on as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. That process will be completed by the end of July, her party said.

“I tried three times. I believe it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort,” she said. “It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit.”

What the vote was about?

With just 73 days to go until Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union, lawmakers Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected — by a vote of 432 to 202 — the withdrawal deal painstakingly negotiated between Prime Minister Theresa May and her European counterparts.

It was the largest defeat for a sitting government in history and showed just how unpopular the deal was.  The motion must be worded: “That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty’s Government.”

Politicians were voting on the deal Mrs May struck with the European Union after more than two years of negotiations.

It set out a plan for how the would leave the EU on 29 March.

This deal covered some hugely important issues such as what will happen to citizens living in the EU and how much money the will have to pay to leave.

What comes next?

The leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has tabled what’s known as a vote of no confidence in the government. This lets MPs decide on whether they want the government to continue.

It will be held on Wednesday evening and, if parliament decides that it does not want the government to carry on, then it could trigger a general election.

If, as many analysts predict, Mrs May survives the vote then she says she will present parliament with a different Brexit plan on Monday.

If nothing else happens it will be a no-deal Brexit, This means – as you might expect – the leaving on 29 March without a formal agreement.

Mrs May could resign as leader of the Conservative Party, triggering an internal contest to replace her without a general election.

But remember, she defeated an attempt to oust her as leader of the Conservative Party in December, winning a confidence vote by 200 votes to 117.
