Oscars of Science: All You Need to Know About Most Glamorous Event in the Scientists’ World

Breakthrough Prize is the most glamour event in the circle of scientists. It took place in Silicon Valley when the Breakthrough Foundation gave away $22 million to 12 men and women working on physical, biological and mathematical problems at a ceremony on Sunday night.

This annual event has been held for six years and is supported by the number of famous philanthropists: Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Priscilla Chan, Yuri Milner, a Silicon Valley tech investor, Anne Wojcicki, DNA testing company 23andMe, and co-founder of Google – Sergey Brin.

This event provides a unique opportunity for the unknown for an average person, but leading scientists to be noticed and honored by the celebrities: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Morgan Freeman, Mila Kunis and many others.

Winners 2017

This year, the winners of Breakthrough Prizes won $3m each for their work in different fields, including mathematics, biology, and physics.

Young talents

The winner of Breakthrough Junior Challenge, world-wide science video competition, was an 18-year-old girl – Filipino Hillary Diane Andales, one of the youngest successes of the event. Her winning submissions is $400,000 in educational prizes (scholarship and lab).

Biology breakthrough

Joanne Chory at the Salk Institute was honored for the working on genetic programs regarding plants reaction when someone is trying to steal their light. Oxford University geneticist Kim Nasmyth won a prize for his work on chromosomes.

Kazutoshi Mori at Kyoto University and Peter Walter, a UCSF biochemist, received a Breakthrough Prize for his work on how cells use proteins, and Don Cleveland at the University of California, San Diego, for his research on motor neuron disease.

Math breakthrough

The $3m Breakthrough prize in mathematics was shared by Christopher Hacon and James McKernan. They elaborated a new view on birational algebraic geometry.

Physics breakthrough

27 physicists of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe won the $3m prize in fundamental physics. The team worked on the detailed maps of the early universe and made a great contribution to our knowledge of the evolution of the universe and development of the galaxies.
