Winter storm

America is freezing as the extremely low temperature and snowstorm covered East Coast. The US is currently on its 10th day of record-breaking frigid temperatures which began around Christmas. As a result, more than 60 million people in 15 different states stretching from Maine to Georgia are under some type of warning or advisory from the current winter storm.

Tallahassee, Florida, recorded measurable snow on Wednesday for the first time in 28 years.

Charleston, South Carolina, saw a record of 5.3 inches of snow, which was the largest snowfall in 28 years.

States of emergency were in effect in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia and blizzard warnings from the Canadian border as far south as Virginia.

What is a ‘bomb cyclone’?

Forecasters also warned about a so-called “bomb cyclone” or “weather bomb”. It is an unofficial term for what is known as explosive cyclogenesis, according to BBC Weather.

This occurs when the central pressure of a low pressure system falls by 24 millibars in 24 hours and can result in violent winds developing around the system.

The winds can be strong enough to bring down trees and cause structural damage.

What to expect?

The bomb cyclone is expected to strike Thursday, will likely dump 6 to 12 inches of snow in New England and hurl 40- to 60-mph gusts.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that “Arctic air mass will remain entrenched over the eastern two thirds of the country through the end of the week”.
“Very cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills expected,” the NWS added.

Dozens of cities in the eastern US are expected to set record lows Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including New York City and Philadelphia — predicted to be 3 degrees – and Boston, where temperatures may go to -7. Areas around Boston were forecast to see about one foot (30cm) of snow on Thursday, and the National Weather Service predicted a similar amount and wind gusts of up to 55mph (90 km/h) in New York City.

As it was reported, schools were ordered to close in both cities.

“This could bring some very dangerous conditions,” the New York mayor, Bill de Blasio, said late on Wednesday.

“Both rush hours will be affected,” the Boston mayor, Marty Walsh, earlier told a news conference. “Be patient. With the amount of snow we’re getting here, we could be plowing your street and a half hour later it could look like we haven’t been there.”
