Driving energy of the movie

The movie is named after the song of Queen – “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which says basically everything about the movie. Powerful energy, clear highlights, and outstanding musicians’ performances.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” has the driving energy of a stadium anthem and the fizzy meaninglessness of a bubblegum pop song,” as Alonso Duralde wrote for TheWrap.

Rami Malek is perfect Freddie Mercury

In the interview for New York Times, Malek stated that he had to work through conflicts of his own during the preparation for the role of Freddie Mercury. He added that though Freddy was such an open person on stage, he had never shared more information about himself that he actually wanted people to known. “It’s nice to be able to own privacy, some bit of anonymity,” Malek said. “That’s a Freddie thing.”

“It’s hard to come up with someone who would have been better than Malek. To his credit, he does the one thing that would most seem impossible: In the stage scenes, he makes you believe he’s Freddie Mercury,” writes Mick LaSalle for San Francisco Chronicle.

“Malek gives an incredible performance and is honestly the only reason to keep watching the movie,” Jason Guerrasio for Business Insider.

Might not live up to expectations of most loyal fans

Some of the biggest fans might be disappointed by the plot structure (that gets sometimes ridiculous) and the highlights of the movie. People were not satisfied with the way sex life of Freddie Mercury was shown and some stereotypes about the band, “the film makes you feel like you’re watching a group of talented actors cosplay Queen’s Wikipedia page.”

However, Queen superfans won’t be able resist signing along with the most popular songs during the Live Aid performance. If you are quite skeptical about the movie, you should watch at least for this scene.

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds an approval rating of 56% based on 96 reviews and an average rating of 6/10.

Here are 3 top critics reviews from Rotten Tomatoes:

  • “The critical failure of Bohemian Rhapsody is that, 134 minutes after the lights go down, the members of Queen just seem like four blokes who’ve been processed through the rusty machinery of a Hollywood biopic,” David Ehrlich for indieWire.
  • “Frankly, if you are not cheering along with the crowd as Mercury belts out an ultra-satisfying rendition of “We are the Champions,” then a doctor should check your pulse. Somewhere, an outrageous artist knows that his Queen movie rules,” Mara Reinstein for Us Weekly.
  • “[A] sprawling, jumbled and disappointingly airbrushed new movie about the legendary rock band and especially its incandescent frontman, Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek),” Justin Chang for Los Angeles Times.
