Recently, a recruitment website Hired surveyed 2,349 tech professionals. Respondents were asked what they were looking for and which companies they wanted to work at internationally and locally.

The survey respondents lived in 15 tech hubs: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC in the US; London in the UK; Melbourne and Sydney in Australia; Toronto in Canada; and Singapore.

Candidates were provided with the list of most influential and famous companies in order to select which brand they consider to be most attractive.

A rise in candidates motivated by personal growth presents an opportunity for companies of all sizes to showcase a more holistic work experience.

Top Global Companies

Unsurprisingly, the global top 10 firms techies wanted to work for were mostly world-renowned names based in California, including SpaceX, Google, Tesla and Facebook. The outliers were Toronto-based e-commerce platform Shopify and Atlassian, a software development company in Sydney.

Top Employer Brand by City

In case of geographic division the situation is rather different comparing with hot global brands such as SpaceX, Google, Shopify, Tesla, and Netflix that topped the list. Thus, startups like SendGrid ranked the highest in Denver, while traditional financial services companies like Capital One received the highest scores in Washington, DC. Redfin, a newly public company as of this year, topped the list in Seattle, according to Hired.

The most well-known and fastest growing brands like Google, Facebook, and Netflix became the most appealing for tech workers in San Francisco.

LA’s top 3 companies are SpaceX, Hulu and Hyperloop One (by the way two of three have strong connection with Elon Musk) and expectedly  for some Fandango (founded in 1999) made top ten list at #7. Dating platforms Tinder and eHarmony’s brand positivity scores also ranked in the top ten.

Another surprise is that Amazon tech giant was rated only third in a list of top Seattle brands, despite some other previous surveys showed it was the most beloved company for US customers.

London’s tech talent gravitates toward companies outside the traditional technology industry. For example, BBC, Skyscanner, Transport for London, Deliveroo and Booking.com sit at the top of the city’s brand health list. Xero, an accounting software company based in New Zealand, leads in Melbourne as the most desirable place to work. Sydney is home to the globally recognized enterprise software company Atlassian, which, perhaps not surprisingly, leads the city’s brand positivity index — and ranks in the top 10 global brands as well.

In general, the most factors candidates look for during their job search is compensation and benefits that is top priority for over half of respondents, “which isn’t as high as we had expected”, the Hired said. According to the research, US candidates care more about salary than their global counterparts, with workers in London, Sydney and Melbourne showing the least concern when it comes to salary. Other factors are competing for candidates’ interests, including opportunities to learn new skills and finding a fit with company culture, which aren’t far behind in second and third place.
