Benefits of Consistent Self Improvement

In today’s fast paced world, it’s easy to get lost in the mind-numbing routines of day-to-day life, and forget about occasionally measuring who we are versus who we wanted to be. The easiest thing in the world is to think that this is it; we are what we are, and just go on with it. However, the benefits of adopting a growth mindset —if done right— can extend beyond the physical and mental aspects of ourselves.

Consistent self-improvement doesn’t only mean being mindful of what we put into our bodies and working out, although those might be a good way to start. Enhancing who we are as human beings, not only gives life a different kind of meaning, but can help us make peace with the world, ourselves, and the universe as a whole.

Today, we delve into what can be achieved through the thoughtful act of deliberately evolving.

Increasing Self Awareness
Think of the amount of time and effort we spend getting to know others, adapting to their personalities, and adjusting to their needs in order to make life easier for all parties involved. If only we did this for ourselves as well.

If you stop to think about it, wouldn’t introspection go a long way in the way we perceive others and the world around us? Taking the time to know yourself, evaluate your capabilities, and understand your limitations will enable you to have a better idea of what you can and can’t do and accept, what you should avoid or fix, and what you need to work on.

For you to smoothly (or less problematically) navigate through life and relationships, it’s important to never lose touch with yourself. For example, highly sensitive people tend to end up depressed simply because they themselves don’t take the time to get to know why they are the way they are. An article from Self Development Secrets says that there are actually 10 traits of a sensitive or emotional person, and none of which is a negative trait. Personal growth is a way to understand and utilize your own personality to lead a healthier lifestyle mentally and emotionally.

Enhancing Personal Strengths
Continuous self-improvement allows you to identify your personal strengths and develop them along the way. From navigating human relationships to achieving career goals, being aware of your strengths is vital. It provides you with the base upon which you can set your goals, plan your approaches, and manage hiccups that arise along the way.

When you know what you are capable of, then your idea of what you want will be more realistic and attainable, given that you continue to build on what you excel at and make the best use of your most prominent qualities. Nurturing your strengths also gives you a better sense of being and self-worth, and promotes a healthier self-esteem.

Greater Self Acceptance
As you revel in the good qualities you find in yourself, you also learn to make peace with your weaknesses, and accept your flaws. Reminding yourself that nobody’s perfect, and that everyone has imperfections can only take you so far. But when you add to that the awareness of the things that make you great, the things that make you imperfect tend to be easier to live with.

Once you’ve done that, then it’s up to you to either keep working solely on your strengths, or to overcome your weaknesses by correcting certain behaviors or learning new skills. It’s important to keep in mind that working on yourself is not a linear process, nor is it an easy endeavor. So always remember to give yourself credit for how far you’ve come, and to understand that everyone is a work in progress— it’s a cliché, but it’s also true.

Leaving the Comfort Zone
… even for a while.

For many of us, doing the same things and living the same way may be comfortable and hassle-free. But once you embark on the journey of self-improvement, you will find that you might naturally want to do something differently, or try something completely new.

Not only will this help enrich your knowledge of life, yourself, and others, but it will also play a great part in shaping the rest of your life. Leaving the comfort zone doesn’t mean abandoning it completely; think of it as going away on vacation at a place you’ve never been—you’re bound to learn a thing or two, and who knows, you might use those lessons learned in the next chapter of your existence.

Choosing to work on yourself doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with you. Never underestimate the power of mindfulness when dealing with the self in light of everything else. Keeping a journal, going to therapy, and reading self-help and spiritual guidance literature are all great ways to start practicing self-improvement and embracing growth.
