Nationwide ban on mobile phones in France

A campaign pledge of President Emmanuel Macron’s brought the ban on using mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches in from primary and junior high schools. The authorities believe that children will be less distracted during the learning process. Also, this new law will help combat bullying and encourage children to take part in the class.

“Being open to technologies of the future doesn’t mean we have to accept all their uses,” Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said in June.

Carolyn Roberts, the Head of Thomas Tallis School, Blackheath, south London, has commented on the French ban on mobile phones during the lessons.

“I look out of the window where my young people are enjoying the sun at break. I can see about 600 of them, hardly a phone in sight. When they go to the next lesson, their phones will be silent in their bags. Perhaps they’ll use a phone if there aren’t enough calculators, or to take a photo of their homework.

“Perhaps they’ll record a conversation. Perhaps they’ll look up a fact. Perhaps they’ll use it in a digital safety lesson. Perhaps a couple will be confiscated today, from 1,900 students.”

The head thinks that children don’t need this ban as most of them know it’s rude to text during the class. “I go to meetings where adults email, text and surf the internet when they should be engaging. It’s not like that at : our young people know that’s rude.”

In the real life, this ban won’t last for long. The studies show students are constantly breaking the rules in French schools that had already adopted the new law. It’s actually not strange, as devices help pupils to study and be closer to their friends.

On the other hand, children also use the mobile phones to cheat and distract other pupils.
