Grande is suing Forever 21 for $10 million

Pop singer Ariana Grande filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Federal Court against Forever 21, an American chain of clothing and cosmetics stores, and its affiliate Riley Rose. According to Reuters, Ariana Grande claims $10 million for copyright infringement and the use of her image in promoting retailer goods.

According to the lawsuit, since the beginning of 2019, Forever 21 used the advertising campaign with Grande’s lookalike on its website and social networks and didn’t pay the singer for it, but “simply stole it by launching a misleading campaign across its website and social media platforms primarily in January and February 2019,” hiring a model strikingly similar to Grande for revenue purposes.

The plaintiffs counted at least 30 similar photos and videos of the retailer, including those using music and lyrics from Ariana Grande’s single “7 Rings”.

“The resemblance is uncanny and Forever 21’s intent was clear: to suggest to the viewing public that Ms. Grande endorsed Forever 21, its products, and was affiliated with Forever 21.”

According to the lawsuit, during the advertising campaign, the retailer used a model lookalike that resembles Grande. The company itself refused to comment on the singer’s claims and expressed hope that a mutually acceptable solution would be found.

“Forever 21 does not comment on pending litigation as per company policy,” the statement says.

“That said, while we dispute the allegations, we are huge supporters of Ariana Grande and have worked with her licensing company over the past two years,” the statement continued. “We are hopeful that we will find a mutually agreeable resolution and can continue to work together in the future.”
