Are Ghosts Real?

It has been an age old question that has been asked from generation to generation. It spans cultures, countries, age, race, and religion. Are ghosts real? This one question has plagued science and religion since the beginning of time because of the complexity it poses. The answers are not so simply black and white. Some argue they do exist, others argue that they do not, and some are unsure. For those of us who are not quite sure if ghosts are in fact real, this article will help try to give you some insight into this age old conundrum.

Are ghosts real? Let’s take a look:

1. Sleep Paralysis
Many people believe that they are being harassed or visited in the night by ghosts. This phenomenon can usually be attributed to sleep patterns, which most scientists believe is the cause of night time experiences or events in relation to paranormal activity. Sleep paralysis is the action of your brain, preventing you from acting out dreams while in deep rest. Some people still remain conscious during this time and start to see things like shadows or movement in the dark that they attribute to ghosts or spirits, when in fact it is usually their own mind playing tricks on them. This is one of the ways in which science of the mind has debunked ghosts, at least in one aspect of psychological study.

2. Electromagnetic Fields
One of the ways in which people have attempted to, and claim to have monitored ghost activity, is through electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are present everywhere as our planet is situated between two poles that are guided by gravity. In the physical earth and in the air, pulses of magnetic energy are present and have been attributed to ghostly beings.

For those hunting ghosts, EMF Readers are a common piece of equipment. As mentioned here,, you can’t go unarmed when you head out into your paranormal investigations. These EMF Readers and other ghost hunting equipment will allow you to accomplish much more than the unequipped hunter. These readers are able to detect these fields which are naked to the visible eye. Although there are electromagnetic fields everywhere, changes in these fields can sometimes be unexplained.

3. Infrasound
Infrasound is a sound level below our hearing range. Similar to how a dog can hear specific whistle ranges and we can’t. Infrasound has been commonly associated with ghosts or paranormal entities because although we cannot hear the sounds of infrasound, we can feel the effects. Often times people will describe nausea, disorientation and unpleasantness as effects associated with infrasound. While there are causes for infrasound that can be monitored, like low frequency sounds emitted from electronic devices, there still remain many sources that cannot be monitored so easily or even explained. Feelings of sorrow, fear, or discomfort are common when exposed to infrasound, which is usually a feeling attributed to the fear of being watched or monitored by an unseen force. The jury is still out on whether infrasound is explainable through scientific method, or if it is indicative of something more mysterious.

4. Cultural Differences
In countries that have remained strongly tied to their religious or cultural faith, ghost sightings or reports have been greater. Places like Asia and Africa, which have strong ties to spiritual or religious teachings have maintained a stronger bond with the idea that there exists outside of the scientific method, paranormal beings and the general belief that ghosts or spirits are real. In Western countries, the rise of skepticism, the strong relationship with science and a declining participation or belief in religion, has led to a decrease in paranormal phenomenon. This doesn’t mean that any of these cultures are right or wrong when it comes to ghosts, but it does explain why there are discrepancies in which cultures believe in what. This is just one of the explanations for how the belief in the existence of ghosts is a topic of argument.

While the belief in whether the ghosts are real or not has not changed much from the typical yes or no argument, there has been some changes in the attitudes towards certain parts of the argument. Scientific methods have helped alleviate some of the beliefs that have been associated with whether the ghosts are real or not. Electromagnetic fields, infrasound, sleep paralysis are all examples of how science has helped us gain a better explanation for some of the phenomena. They do not provide definitive proof that ghosts do or do not exist, but they allow us to better navigate the arguments for or against them in relation to more traditional beliefs like different cultural practices and religious conceptions of the paranormal. Regardless of your stance, you can always try picking up your own EMF reader or infrasound reader and try hunting them yourself!
