Unbelievable, but true
New innovative technology, LiDAR digitally removed the earth layer and revealed the hidden civilizations believed to be connected to Maya tribes.
“The LiDAR images make it clear that this entire region was a settlement system whose scale and population density had been grossly underestimated,” said Thomas Garrison, a National Geographic Explorer.

The scientists have found the ancient ruins of 60,000 places of living and other human-made structures (cities, fortifications, and highways) hidden for years below Guatemalan jungles.
The map covers about 800 square miles of the ancient territories in the northern part of Guatemala.

Results of the research revealed that Central America was a place for such civilizations as Maya with more advanced culture than Asian and European cultures.
The peak of the development of this civilisation is suggested to be 1,200 ago. Except for cities and various structures, the laser scans show the landscapes reshaped by the human hand.

The scans also have shown that the civilization was densely populated and its territory was two times as big as medieval England.

This research is a true breakthrough in archeology.
“After decades of combing through the forests, no archaeologists had stumbled across these sites,” said Kathryn Reese-Taylor, a University of Calgary archaeologist.
“More importantly, we never had the big picture that this data set gives us”
