‘Whitney’ documentary premiere

“Whitney,” a documentary detailing the life and career of singer and actress Whitney Houston, will make its United States debut on July 6, Roadside Attractions presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff and Miramax CEO Bill Block announced Friday.

Child’s Play remake is in the works

MGM is remaking Child’s Play, the 1980s horror movie centering on a toy doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer, with It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith.

Directed by ’80s and ’90s horror mainstay Tom Holland and co-created by Don Mancini, Child’s Play told the story of a popular toy doll named Chucky that becomes possessed and terrorizes a single mom and her son, as the killer needs the son’s body to jump into before his transference to the doll becomes permanent.

Scarlett Johansson faces backlash over a transgender role

Re-teaming with the Ghost in the Shell director Rupert Sanders, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in a feature called Rub & Tug, about the true-life story of Jean Marie Gill, who was assigned female at birth but who assumed the identity of a man, Dante “Tex” Gill, and operated a massage parlor and prostitution business in Pittsburgh in the 1970s and ’80s.

When news of the project broke this week, many began to criticize Johansson, a cisgender woman, for choosing to play a transgender man, arguing that the role should have gone to a transgender actor.

Idris Elba to play a villain in ‘Fast and Furious’ spinoff

Idris Elba is in final negotiations to play the main villain in “Hobbs and Shaw,” the “Fast and Furious” spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

“Deadpool 2” director David Leitch is on board to helm, with Johnson and Statham reprising their roles as special agent Luke Hobbs and criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw, respectively. “Fast and Furious” architect Chris Morgan penned the script, with production set to commence this fall.

Miles Teller joins Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun’ sequel

As reported by Variety, Miles Teller has been cast in the role of Goose’s son, who is now Maverick’s new protégé.

Goose was Maverick’s co-pilot in the 1986 Top Gun, where he was played by Anthony Edwards. The character died in the movie, but apparently, his legacy will live on with his kid.
