What you need to know about acute flaccid myelitis

CDC confirmed 116 cases of acute flaccid myelitis in US in 2018, a polio-like condition that mostly affects children.

The disease affects a nervous system and causes weakness in their arms and legs. The cases of the illness have been confirmed in 31 states, according to CDC.

“This task force will ensure that the full capacity of the scientific community is engaged and working together to provide important answers and solutions to actively detect, more effectively treat, and ultimately prevent AFM and its consequences,” said CDC director Robert Redfield, M.D., in a statement.

Most of the patients affected by AFM are children, stated CDC. Usually, people had a mild respiratory illness before they became affected by the acute flaccid myelitis.

Symptoms include drooping face and eyelids, loss of facial movement or weakness, difficulty with moving eyes and swallowing, and slurred speech, sudden arm or leg weakness.
