To get the part in Guardians of the Galaxy Chris Pratt went through “three or four hours a day of consistent, ass-kicking hard work”. His weight was around 300 pounds before he started working out! He gained this weight purposely for another role – Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation.

So Marvel found a personal trainer Duffy Gaver and nutritionist Phil Goglia for Chris and the work has begun. His diet was changed and he was drinking A LOT of water. “I was peeing all day long, every day. That part was a nightmare,” Pratt said.

When Chris Hemsworth got the part of Thor, he had to pack on some mass. He first got a personal trainer and former Navy SEAL, Duffy Gaver. His approach was more of an old-school bodybuilding one. Chris gained 20 pounds and worked a lot on his arms and shoulders.

“People see Chris and they think he was on steroids but he didn’t touch a single substance,” Gaver says. “It was just red meat, heavyweights, and some protein powder. He crushed every single workout. He simply decided to look like Thor.”

To get the look of the superhero Captain America, Chris Evans, who used to be quite slim, spent many months building muscle and adding size to his frame. He used a lot of different techniques and exercises to make sure he’s not just muscular, but also fast and agile.

“The preparation for Captain America was really about me bulking up looks wise, so it was a lot of weight training so I could get big. The training regimen was based on heavyweight/low-rep sets of the classic compound lifts. I did stuff like squats, deadlifts, shoulder press, incline bench presses, weighted dips, and chin-ups,” Evans explained.

Jackman was working on more of an “animalistic” look for his character with clearly defined muscles and even popping veins ever since X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in particular.

“With the first three X-Men films I never had Wolverine exactly how I wanted him to look, to be honest,” Jackman said. “Now I want Logan to look animalistic, savage, carnal, veins popping out, and coiled like a spring. I wanted audiences to say, ‘OK, this guy could quite easily rip someone’s head off.’ That was always the goal.” And what does it mean? Yes, a lot of lean protein at 4am, in order to start digesting before 6am and then an intense workout in the gym.

Jeremy Renner described his routine during filming:

“You get up at four in the morning and work out for eight hours and fight and stretch and do all this stuff because it’s part of your job. But I’m not doing that if I’m not working.” He was also trained under Olympic archers to help him with the role, and he said:

“Real archery is not superhero Hawkeye archery,” he said. “So [the training] kind of helped but it kind of got in the way, as well. I did train to shoot arrows.”

Also, a key to success: “I stretch. I literally stretch,” he said. “Pop a hip here, pop a hip there. Make sure I have blood flowing through my body.”

“I was one of those people who always wanted the results, but never wanted to put in the work,” Rudd told Men’s Journal. But to get that superhero body he hired a nutritionist Carlon Colker, M.D., and a personal trainer Richard Louis.

“I’ll be honest—I didn’t know who Paul was before I started working with him,” Louis says. “The first couple of sessions we did together were rough, but Paul came back every time ready to put in the work. I don’t know if people realize what it takes to get the results he did.”

For the Black Panther role, Chadwick practiced capoeira, karate, kung-Fu, and jiu-jitsu. Quite an impressive list! “The physical part is what makes it fun for me and helps me get inside the characters,” he said. “The spirit of the character is going to begin to come out.” Which is something many people can miss when starting to workout. He also said that even after Spider-Man: Homecoming, he was super inspired and motivated to unleash his inner superhero.

He also had some secret workout routine: “[Training includes] a lot of strength and flexibility, but I’m not going to say anymore. I can’t say or reveal their training secrets,” he said.
