Saratov Airlines Flight 703 went down on Sunday near Ramenskoye town, about 40km from Moscow’s second-largest airport.

The crew didn’t report any problems before the plane crashed into snowy terrain.

The Antonov An-148 aircraft was carrying 65 passengers and six crew members. The passengers included three children, ages 5, 13 and 17, state news agency RIA reported.

The plane was headed to the Russian city of Orsk, near the border with Kazakhstan. But it disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff from Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport.

“The snow is very dense … the Moscow region has had some of its heaviest snowfall in decades,” CNN’s Matthew Chance reported from Moscow.

“It’s not clear at this stage whether the weather was a factor in this crash.”

The cause of the crash remains uncertain. The Investigative Committee of Russia said officials have launched a criminal investigation, as all possible causes are being explored.

Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled a trip to Sochi in order to monitor the investigation by himself.

What do we know about the plane

  • The An-148 was designed in Antonov company (Ukraine) and manufactured in both Ukraine and Russia.
  • It saw the world in the beginning of 2010;
  • During its history, An-148 had a two-year break because of a shortage of parts;
  • The plane was ordered by Rossiya Airlines and was put into storage during 2015-2017.
  • The An-148 re-entered service for Saratov Airlines in February 2017.

It’s not the first when Russia shows its poorly organized civil aviation.  For instance, a Boeing 737-800 crashed while landing at Rostov-on-Don, killing all 62 people aboard in March 2016.

Previously,  a Russian Metrojet airliner was destroyed by a bomb after taking off from Egypt’s Sharm al-Sheikh resort, killing 244 people in a result.

Who were the passengers?

You can see the official list of people who were on the plane, passengers and crew members, on the emergency agency website.

An experienced pilot had flown the plane with 5,000 hours of flight experience. Among the people, there were a child and two teenagers.
