Solo traveling might sound terrifying and just simply not that fun as with someone else. And, well, it is actually quite scary and not easy but it is extremely liberating and you have to try it at least once in your life.

Nexter.org prepared you 7 tips on how to plan your trip.

  1. Decide where you want to go

Starting with the basics – to go on a trip you have to choose where you want to go. It doesn’t matter how close or far this place will be to your hometown, just pick a place you feel comfortable visiting.

  1. Practice solo travel at home

Going to a completely unknown place is pretty stressful so you have to prepare yourself. And one of the best ways to do it is practice. Try going to a place you’ve never been to in your own city, plan this little trip, find places you want to visit, etc. Make it seem like a full-on adventure but in your comfort zone. If you live in a small town – go to a town nearby.

  1. Plan everything

When you are traveling with someone, a little bit of mystery, like zero plans for the day, just going somewhere without direction etc. sounds like fun. But when you are alone, that might be not the best, and quite dangerous, idea.

So, plan everything you want to see, where and what you want to eat and so on. It doesn’t mean that you have to stick to this plan no matter what, but it is always great to have it with you.

  1. Accommodation

Before picking a place to stay, always check other people review’s, as the picture will always look good but you won’t know if the room is really like it seems before you arrive. Also, if you’d like to use sites like Couchsurfing, do your research even more thorough and your safety must be a priority.

  1. Pack light

This one is for people, who like to take like 3 outfits for each day. Yes, that would be awesome to have those with you to take cool photos, but when you travel solo, it would be much better to take only the most important things and leave all those piles of clothes behind.

  1. Keeping in touch

When you are traveling on your own it is always great to stay in touch with your friends and family as it will both help you deal with loneliness and will make your relatives at least a little bit less worried about you. So, make sure you always have enough data on your phone and that a place you stay in has a free Wi-Fi connection.

  1. Better to be safe than sorry

Always trust your gut. If you feel like the owner of the place you stay in is creepy, or the food seems weird or you just simply don’t feel safe or comfortable, do what will make that feeling come back, whether it is changing something or coming back home –  both a totally fine.

Do not consider it to be a failure and do not push yourself to something you truly don’t want to. And remember – your safety must always come first.

Have you ever traveled on your own?
