Barbie used to be a call girl

According to Time, Barbie was based on “Bild Lilli,” which was a plastic version of a “saucy high-end call girl”. Lilli was sold in adult-themed toy stores, tobacco shops, and bars. Obviously, it wasn’t supposed to be a kids toy although it was quite popular among them.

When Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel was on vacation in Switzerland, she took a couple of Bild Lilli’s home to make what we now know as a Barbie doll.

Promoting eating disorders

Once upon a time, Mattel released a Barbie doll which not only had quite unrealistic female proportions but also seemed to be promoting this way of looking to young girls.

According to Huffington Post, the “Slumber Party Barbie” (1965) was released with a pink silk pajamas, pink open-toed heels (why would she need those though?), a bathroom scale showing 110 pounds, and a book called “How to Lose Weight,” with one and only phrase printed on its back cover: “Don’t eat!”

Growing bigger boobs

In 1964, Mattel released a Barbie’s little sister named Skipper. And later, in 1974 they decided that they don’t want her to be a kid forever and released an upgraded version which got taller and grew bigger breasts when her arm was rotated. Parents hated the doll and Mattel stopped selling it in 1977.

Teen Talk Barbie

Teen Talk Barbie which was released in 1992, was a verbal one, and she mostly talked about weddings, clothes (“Will we ever have enough clothes??”), and shopping, you know, the kinda things ALL teenage girls are interested in. Anyway, the thing that got people even more angry with this doll is the fact that she was saying: “Math class is tough!” supporting the stereotype that girls can’t be good at math.

Oreo Barbie

In 1997, Mattel and Nabisco got together and thought of a brilliant idea –  a Barbie doll dressed as an Oreo. Even though the first version did surprisingly well, the second one didn’t.

If for some reason you do not understand why it is not okay to call a black girl an “Oreo,” it is because it’s a derogatory term used to accuse a black person of being white on the inside, not unlike the cookie.

Dolls of the world

In 2013 Mattel decided to create their “Dolls of the World” collection. Which sounds like a nice idea but the executing was awful. So let assume you want to make the most stereotypical French Barbie doll, what kind of accessories would you give her? Obviously, a beret and a baguette. That’s exactly what they did. Well, at least all of the dolls were equally horrible stereotypical.

Surveillance Barbie

Source: The Verge

Hello Barbie is a doll your kids can talk to and she will actually listen, they can tell her all their secrets and she will answer with one of the 8,000 programmed responses. How creepy is that?

She records the voice of the child, uploads it to the ToyTalk company servers, they translate it into text and find the response that will match the keywords. Oh, and they also save all the data.

A spokesperson from Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood said, “They really shouldn’t call it Hello Barbie. They should call it Surveillance Barbie.”

Which one surprised you the most?
