Scotland not only switched the gender of the main character but also he wasn’t even a mermaid. He was a kelpie, which is kind of a horse-like monster who lives in a lake. Usually, they are dangerous but they can be friendly as well.

So, in a story called The Kelpie and the Girl, a kelpie boy falls in love with a human girl and hoping to marry her he turns into a man.

 

Norway, Puss in Boots

There is a Norwegian fairy tale called Lord Peter. It is about 3 brothers, who divide their parents’ inheritance and the youngest one, Peter, gets nothing but the cat. But he actually helps him to pose as a lord and even transforms into a beautiful woman, who turned out to be an enchanted princess.

 

India, Sleeping Beauty

In an Indian fairy tale called King Sandalwood, a princess gets cast out by her mean sisters-in-law. They told her to come back only if she marries the long-dead King Sandlewood. She finds his tomb and it turns out that he is not actually dead. An evil fairy stole a magic necklace that holds his lifeforce. He sleeps during the day and comes back to life at night.

The story is called Chicken Girl Marries [the Sun]. A girl named Chicken Girl is always gets bullied by her own mother and older sister. When the village plans to host a great ball, she is not allowed to go. But the chickens make her a dress and Tawa, the personification of the sun, falls in love with her and escorts her personally.

 

Africa, Snow White

The Beautiful Daughter is a story about an evil princess and her beautiful daughter. Things are pretty much the same as in a story we know. But when Snow White got poisoned she was found by a chief who falls in love with her and takes her body to his home, where his daughter removes the pin which poisoned her and eventually Snow White marries a chief and becomes a stepmother to her friend who saved her.  

 

Japan, Beauty and the Beast

The Monkey Husband is a story about a widower who accidentally promised that one of his daughters will marry a monkey. The 2 elder girls refused to do it but the youngest one agreed on one condition: she gets to bring the family prize mortar with her as a wedding present.

One day, she went home because her father got ill and the monkey went with her. She gave him the mortar which was filled with rice balls. It was very heavy and caused him to fall into a river and the daughter was able to return to her family.

 

Italy, Aladdin

The story is called Gigi and the Magic Ring and it tells us about the hero, Gigi, who has a wish-granting ring. He used it to find a beautiful girl named Maliarda and marry her. But she is not what she seems to be. She steals the ring and uses it to banish him to a mountain taking all the riches he had to herself. Luckily, the story has a happy ending and Gigi gets saved and leaves Maliarda with nothing.
