7 Biggest Netflix Scandals Ever – Why You Shouldn’t Watch 13 Reasons Why

74

Today, Netflix is an entertainment giant which has its own movie and television originals. And just like any other giant company it had its pile of scandals. In one of them, they lost almost $39 million and this was the time they actually did the right thing.

Nexter.org collected some spicy scandals that hit Netflix.

Bird Box

Using real disaster footage in fictional and television shows is a bad idea. Yes, it saves a lot of time and money but this is a BAD IDEA. Especially, if we are talking not about some old footage from long-ago disasters but about the 2013 Lac-Megantic rail disaster in Quebec, which claimed 47 lives, which Netflix used to illustrate the early, apocalyptic scenes in the film Bird Box.

The clip came from a stock footage company, so maybe Netflix didn’t even know about its origins but they didn’t hurry to remove it when they found out. It happened only after Canadian officials sent Netflix an open letter.

13 reasons why

13 Reasons Why was almost immediately criticized, because it kind of romanticized suicide. Adults with stable lives may be able to watch it from a detached perspective, but younger people especially the ones having social challenges may not. According to Rolling Stone, this TV show makes suicide seem like the easy way out.

If you or anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Baby

Baby was inspired by the true story of 14- and 15-year-old girls who sold themselves so they could afford designer clothes. Well, um, making an edgy TV show glamorizing such a terrible thing wasn’t the best of Netflix’s ideas. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) actually thinks the same thing and even asked Netflix to nix the series before its premiere.

Atypical

Quartz says it is supposed to be “a sensitive look at the problems autistic people face in the dating scene.” But it’s a sitcom, so … how sensitive is it gonna be? Critics say that Atypical shows autistic men as stereotypically nerdy and honestly kind of sexist.

The main character of this show is autistic and has troubles understanding social cues and constantly misinterprets the signals coming from other people, especially women. And because he’s autistic, all the awful things he does because of those misinterpretations, like physical abuse, breaking and entering should be excused. But it’s a sitcom, right? Everything for the laughs.

Girl

The scene that shocked many people was the one with a full-frontal shot of the 15-year-old actor who portrays Lara, a transgender girl struggling to succeed as a ballerina. Netflix’s own censors thought the scene was too much, but the film’s director complained and it was left in. But was it really that necessary? They could have told this story without it, that’s for sure.

Kevin Spacey scandal

Because of a sexual misconduct scandal, Kevin Spacey was fired by Netflix.  According to Reuters, the figure was related to “unreleased content [Netflix] decided not to move forward with.” Spacey had more than 30 accusers, eight of them worked for House of Cards. Also, there were many accusations of toxic behavior, like making aggressive advances on minors and putting his hands down the pants of a production assistant.

This thing ended up costing almost $39 million but Netflix definitely did the right thing in this case.

Fox scandal

Source: Hollywood Reporter

According to Hollywood Reporter, Netflix was stealing Fox employees and Fox was not happy about it. As Fox called said a lawsuit, it was “a brazen campaign to unlawfully target, recruit, and poach valuable Fox executives by illegally inducing them to break their employment contracts with Fox to work at Netflix.” Netflix in its turn says that Fox forced its employees to take unfair deals that are against public policy.

Did you know about any of these before?
