6 Times Artificial Intelligence Got Creepy As Hell (Video)

The world’s biggest minds, including Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Steve Wozniak, have long warned about the dangers of AI. There are a number of times artificial intelligence has gotten creepy.

Nexter gives six most horrifying evidence people should be concern about AI.

‘Shelley AI’ Horror writer

Shelley is the world’s first collaborative AI Horror Writer on Twitter. She’s named after Mary Shelley, who wrote Frankenstein. Once per hour, Shelley tweets out a new story at her account @shelley_ai. She relies on responses from other Twitter users to keep the story going but chooses only top stories to response. Users can reply with up to three threaded tweets and end their additions to the story with #yourturn. Other users or Shelley will then chime in to pick up where you left off.

The project is from the MIT Media Lab and is designed by Pinar Yanardag, Manuel Cebrian and Iyad Rahwan, according to Fast.co Design. The team used 140,000 horror stories to teach Shelley to write horror story people will consider most terrifying.

The full list of Shelley’s stories you may find here.

Here are some eeriest stories:

  • I was standing right across the street, when a ghost stood behind me. I was so scared I couldn’t move. I couldn’t move. I wasn’t able to move my eyes, I was screaming.
  • My body was pulled into the room by the presence of someone who was standing somewhere in the hallway. I looked around once and there they were, standing in the corner of the room, as they stared at me, unmoving.
  • I could feel something watching me and I could see this dark shadow standing there with a torrent of hatred in its face. I was beyond scared so I didn’t take my eyes off this thing and turned back towards the mirror to see what was behind me!

Fake Faces

Seems that you’ve seen some of these celebs on the magazine’s cover? Hell yeah, you’re wrong. They all are fakes generated by Nvidia’s artificial intelligence. The researchers used what’s known as a generative adversarial network, or GAN, to make the pictures. GAN was previously shown thousands of real celebrity photos and as a result they got realistic computer-generated faces of people never existed.

Who knows, may be the next US President will be just a computer simulation?

Nazi Chatbot

Microsoft’s AI-powered chatbot, Tay, appeared to be not strong enough to tricky Twitter users. According to the Microsoft, the more you chat with Tay, the smarter it gets, learning to engage people through “casual and playful conversation.” Well, actually it needed less than 24 hours to turn innocent ‘friendly” AI into Nazi and racist.

People starting tweeting the bot with all sorts of misogynistic, racist, and Donald Trumpist remarks. And Tay — being essentially a robot parrot with an internet connection — started repeating these sentiments back to users.

Not a surprise that the company deleted Tay’s account from Twitter.

Chess Winner

Do you play chess like a pro? Well, this AlphaZero AI created by Google did. Another computer triumph over humans. It needed only 4 hours to touch itself to play chess and beat world’s best champion chess program. As reported, AlphaZero was given only the rules, but not the strategy and algorithms of the game. The program was trained independently. In total there were 100 games. AlphaZero won 25 times playing with white and 3 more times with black. The rest of the games played a draw. That is, AlphaZero did not has a single loss.

AI that creates AI

Google’s AutoML project, designed to make AI build its own ‘children’ – other AIs. Actually it worked and Google’s AI created another AI that is smarter than a humans-made. This particular child AI, which the researchers called NASNet,is able to recognize objects — people, cars, traffic lights, handbags, backpacks, etc. — in a video in real-time.

Of course, brings lots of scary consequences. If a man teaches machine, and the machine then teaches another machine incorrectly then that data will be passed down from parent to child.

Then, of course, all the AI could decide with one mind that they don’t agree with what they’ve been taught, but don’t bother to tell us, until of course, we get a robot uprising.

Facebook AI’s own language

Earlier this year, Facebook had to shut down an artificial intelligence engine after developers discovered that the AI had created its own unique language that humans can’t understand. Researchers at the Facebook AI Research Lab (FAIR) found that the chatbots had deviated from the script and were communicating in a new language developed without human input. It is as concerning as it is amazing – simultaneously a glimpse of both the awesome and terrifying potential of AI.
