6 Things You Should NOT Leave in Your Car During Polar Vortex
The polar vortex has paralyzed thousands of people with freezing temperatures. For example, in Minneapolis, it could reach minus-54 degrees! And during such weather, you need to remember about the things in your car.
Nexter.org prepared you a list of 6 things you should NOT keep in your vehicle.
Medication

If you keep medication in your can, you’d better take it out during cold weather.   According to a report in The New York Times, “drugs like insulin can lose their effectiveness if they freeze. The same goes for any so-called suspended medication that has to be shaken before use.”
Canned foods

If the water in a can freezes, it will expand and according to USDA, because of this the seal might break and the product will go bad. “If the product doesn’t look and/or smell normal, throw it out. DO NOT TASTE IT! If the seams have rusted or burst, throw the cans out immediately, wrapping the burst can in plastic and disposing the food where no one, including animals can get it.”
Eggs

Do not let eggs freeze in their shells. If that already happened, throw away any cracked eggs and move the un-cracked ones to the refrigerator before use.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, “These can be hard cooked successfully, but other uses may be limited. That’s because freezing causes the yolk to become thick and syrupy so it will not flow like an unfrozen yolk or blend very well with the egg white or other ingredients.”
Musical instruments

Some musical instruments can go out of tune when they freeze. According to The Real School of Music, “damage can be done when an instrument shrinks as a result of the cold air. If your instrument is made of real wood, the cold air can cause cracking, which is very expensive to repair. Sometimes they are broken beyond repair.”
Cellphones

Apple doesn’t advise to store the iPhone or iPad at temperatures below negative-4 degrees and use it at temperatures lower than 32 degrees. The recommendations for Samsung phones and other electronics are similar. Repeated exposure of these devices to subzero temperatures can cause problems.
Soda or beer

As we’ve already said, water expands when it freezes and canned liquids explode. According to NJ.com, the freezing temperature for Coca-Cola is 30 degrees, and the temperature for a beer that’s 5 percent alcohol by volume is 27 degrees.
